Battlefield 3's Campaign is Shit

BF3's single player campaign is a total shambles. The perfect example of style over substance. It looks pretty but it plays like a pig.

After a seen-it-a-billion-times-before opening level set on a train, you relive - via flashbacks - past events in which you shoot a load of faceless bad guys while stuff explodes in the background. Uninspired nonsense.

A particularly tedious level has you sitting in the back seat of a fighter jet while the pilot shouts incomprehensible army-speak at you for 12 hours before anything remotely interesting happens. When the action finally kicks off - shooting down enemy fighters - all you're asked to do is move your cursor over a target, wait for it to go beep, and push a button. I've had more interesting shits to be honest.

This sense of detachment, of not really contributing to the action in any significant way, continues throughout the campaign. I felt like a spectator rather than a participant during the action. I guess it's how a front line war correspondent must feel, in amongst the whizzing bullets and shrapnel but ultimately nothing more than an observer.

When fighting on open ground it's hard to suss exactly where enemy fire is coming from. And because it only takes a few shots to die, a real sense of unfairness and frustration soon creeps in.

I wonder, is the player's sense of detachment an inevitable part of modern warfare's impersonal methods of murder, or is it simply because BF3 is a bad game? I'm opting for the latter. Clocking in at a laughable 4 hours, it's clear that BF3's campaign was nothing more than a lazy afterthought.

My first clue came when I opened the box. This is the first video game I've seen in which the campaign has been relegated to the second disc. This should tell you everything you need to know about where Dice's priorities lie: the mulitplayer.

In a nutshell, the game plays out across countless, heavily scripted set-pieces, rubbish QTE sections and genuinely tedious on-rails moments. If you're thinking about purchasing Battlefield 3 for the campaign, don't. It's one of the worst single player experiences on the Xbox.

  1. If you bought BF3 for singleplayer I feel bad for you son. I bought it for 99 reasons but the campaign ain't one. Hit me!

  2. Is it better than Bad Company 2's campaign?

  3. Got to agree with the comments on the campaign. Call of Duty Black Ops revisited with the flash backs, hated that and hated this. Also seemed jumpy and not very polished. Gonna put the campaign disc to the bottom of the pile and just concentrate on the multiplayer, although I'm having trouble with that re lag (on a 30mb xbox connection)

  4. ....also who wants to end a campaign by pressing B the A the Right Trigger the B, not really a great ending for a FPS.

  7. Big up for having the balls to put that out there in the face of a tidal wave of zombies playing the same game every year.

  8. I have to agree as well! Add to this that the AI can either one-shot kill you and always know where you are, or that they can stand right beside you and not shoot you, nor your mates at them. This ain't CoD, that's for sure. MP isn't my bag, so this game's a dud for me.

  9. Very dissapointed with the singleplayer mode. Black did this kind of thing better on the ps2. Tedious is how I would describe it. As expected, multiplayer is excellent. But I was expecting a lot more from the campaign tbh.

  11. Single campaign felt rushed, messy, and so dull.

  12. I don't think ANYONE would purchase a Battlefield game for the single player purely.

It's really a waste of resources. They might as well focus entirely on the multiplayer.

  13. "If you bought BF3 for singleplayer I feel bad for you son. I bought it for 99 reasons but the campaign ain't one." Pure class! Any true BF gamer doesn't give stuff about SP, it is the best truly team based MP FPS out there by far.

  19. I agree: Single player does not works becouse in the airfield level is impossible to destroy the escaping vip ( BUG).
I got many disconnections whit bf3 and origin.
Origin would not let me login for a whole day telling me" ERROR PASSWORD or EMAIL.
So I complained hard whit ea support and they ( an idiot called Fernando,1 italian idiot and mafious) suspended my account.
So I paid in full for this shit of bf 3 but they don't let me play and don't fix all problems.
Ea game is a sh**t company so I gone and bought COD MW3 and I have no problems.

I'm not an activision collaborator but just a justice to say who working right and fair.
So I starting cracking ea games and sharing it.
Check on totternts to get ea games for free.

I respect your opinion, but BF: BC 2 has nothing on BF3's multiplayer.

  21. I have several problems too:I bought bf 3 for pc and for x box 360;

There are differents issues but they are too much.

I have a long list of bugs, disconnection, black screens, sound crash and other.

I wanna be refunded from ea game but they will not.

So I complained hard for bugs and they banned me.

So I spent 60 euros + 65 euros for both platforms and I lost my money.

    In future I will not buy no more ea games for me and friends.;

I forgotten: Also my friends have several issues.

Ea game I think you are the shame of software houses becouse to get money fast you sold out a beta and not a real game.

  26. Wierd, I actually enjoyed the campaign aswell as the multiplayer in BF3. Could not put it down. Maybe I'm an oddball.

  27. Campaign is total shite, can't see jack and end up getting killed all the time. Multiplayer is absolute toss which begs the question why was this game made? Answer, simply to cash in on the franchise. Long story short I want my money back

  28. This article hits the nail on the head. I bought this game thinking it'd be a bit more free roam, fun, destructible.
Don't play online so i'm well gutted.
